Nature/ Nurture, which is it?
Two fine fine young sons, only 17 months apart, with complete opposite personalities.
Not that I don’t know this, Kev has a tendency towards, shall we say, rigidity, Jim is rather more flexible and I saw it today so startlingly clearly at the barbershop.
Have been promising to take Jim for a haircut for about a week, but keep forgetting, we did finally remember at 7 O’clock on Monday as we were leaving ENT. The Barber’s is across the other side of little town, need a different car park etc so I tried to fob him off with a promise of a cut on Wednesday instead.
Being the sweet, flexible lamb he is, he said “sure, not a problem, if you buy me a Mo’s burger”
Aha, flexible AND cunning.
We finally made it there yesterday. Kev did what he does everytime, he insisted that he didn’t want a cut, in a voice that implied nothing could make him so don’t even waste your breath trying to make him, then promptly changed his mind the minute we walked through the door.
So there they are, two fine sons, sitting in the chairs. Observe, the son on the left, shoulders rigid as a brick wall, head down, doesn’t even look at himself in the mirror.
When the guy is halfway through and Kev is in danger of ending up with an horrendous mullet cut, Kev declares ” No More”, I am forced to put down my book and negotiate perhaps another half centimetre here and there just enough to stop him being laughed out of town. He is gripping the sides of the chair for dear life and only the thought of the free lollipop they’ll give him at the end is keeping his last shred of sanity.
Observe the boy on the right. Having explained in great detail exactly where and how he wants it cut, preened, smiled and winked at himself in the mirror,
he has stretched out his legs so they are resting up on the shelf under the mirror, he lolled his head back while the guy fannied around with a cutthroat razor, the boy a look of total bliss on his face. Though I suspect he was so relaxed he may have been twiddling around a little under the gown iykwim?
